“You better believe I was nervous,” says Murphy after winning debut in Super Lates

San Bernardino (June 8, 2008) – When you have a nickname like “Awesome” Austin Murphy, you better have the skills to back it up.  Murphy demonstrated those skills on Saturday night as he won the 50 lap main event in the BSR West ASA Super Late Model division.  This was Murphy’s first time in a Super Late Model and he took the Hooper’s Rear End/HRO/Best Value Inn/Stick Shift Transmissions sponsored Dodge to the checkered flag after starting on the pole and leading all 50 laps.  Murphy has now won main events in his debut in three different divisions this season, a season that is only 7 weeks old.  Murphy won in the Lucas Oil Late Model division main event on opening night, and then took the checkered flag in the ASA Factory Fours on May 17th.     Early on in the race, 2005 champion Frankie Gould and 2006 champion Glenn Cummings spun out, sending them to the back of the field.  Former champion Dave Scheidecker offered the only real challenge to Murphy as the two raced side by side before Scheidecker spun out in lap 12 leaving Murphy virtually unchallenged for most of the race.  The top five finishers list was notable in that veterans and many past main event winners weren’t on it.

It was another Murphy winning another debut in the ASA Factory Four Division.  Austin’s younger brother Broc Murphy , normally seen in the #76 Frazier Masnonry Legends car, drove the Another Mobile Fleet Service/Envision Signs & Banners sponsored #99 (the same truck Austin Murphy won with) to a victory.  The race was a bitter loss for Kim Marzullo, who started on the pole and led 29 laps until contact with Murphy spun her out on turn one during the final lap of the race.  Murphy had aggressively worked his way through most of the field before leading that final lap for the victory.

2007 Champion Cliff Conklin won his first main event of the 2008 season in the CEC Embroidery Street Stocks division.  Tony Forfa Jr. leaped into the lead at the start of the race and kept it until a pass by Conklin on lap 10.  By lap 13, last week’s main event winner Kyle Meyer had moved into second.  Several yellows and one red flag gave Meyer plenty of chances at Conklin’s lead, but he was unable to take advantage and had to settle for second.  In the final lap of the race, past champion Johnny Russo and Rookie of the Year contender Andrew Murphy (yes, those Murphys) had a heated race for third that Russo won.

The historic quarter mile banked oval of the OSS  was treated to another open wheel experience as the Jr. Ford Focus Midgets provided a 20 lap exhibition.  Cory Neveau from Santa Ana took the lead early and never gave it up, winning his first event at OSS.     Cerritos native Bryan Glidewell earned his first ever main event win in the ASA Pro-4’s division.  Contact between leaders Chuck Becker II and 2006 Rookie of the Year Kyle McGrady in lap 9 gave Glidewell the lead.  Glidewell held the lead but had to fight off numerous advances from Highland’s Kendall Scheidecker who took second.
