Two-time champ wins first main event of the season
San Bernardino (July 27, 2008) – After winning the trophy dash on Saturday night 2006/2007 Lucas Oil ASA Late Model champion Jim Conklin joked, “I’ll be back for that main event trophy,” and that’s just what he did. San Bernardino’s Stevie Smith took the lead early on in the 50 lap main event with fast qualifier Ryan Daniel a close second. 10 laps into the race, Daniel spun, sending him to the rear of the line-up and putting Conklin in second place. Six laps later, Conklin took the lead with Grand Terrace native Brian Malone in tow. Malone was never able to catch Conklin who took the Conklin Hotrods/Alpine Slide/irishpride.com Grand Prix into victory lane for the first time in the 2008 season.
The two Jims, Mardis and Edmiston, have traded ASA Stock Pony main event wins all season long. Saturday night it was Jimmy Mardis’ turn. After contact with Yucaipa’s Robby Hornsby early in the 35 lap main event, both cars were sent to the rear of the line-up. They quickly made their way back towards the front and engaged in a fierce battle for fourth place. Fifteen laps into the race, 2007 champion Jim Edmiston took the lead but traded it back and forth with Wildomar’s Matt Goodwin. After contact between Goodwin and Hornsby sent them to the pits during caution, Mardis was able to take the lead after the restart in lap 22. Despite his best effort, Edmiston was unable to catch Mardis who took the Hot & Nasty/Sinister Motorsports Pinto to his third main event win this season. Rookie of the year candidate Robby Hornsby had his fifth top five finish and won his first Trophy Dash.
Santee’s Darren Amidon continued to dominate the Lenos Rico Taco Inex Legends division. 2007 Legends champ Amidon won his sixth consecutive main event at OSS in his CJ Norby Signs/Tel-Data sponsored Legends car. Amidon took the lead 22 laps into the 35 lap race while Oak Hill’s Chad Schug and El Cajon’s Chase Catania fought for second. Amidon has won very
Legends race at OSS with the exception of the opening night event back in April when he finished third.
The Outlaw Figure 8s returned to the OSS. Due to the tough economic times, however, the car count was low. To provide a show for the fans, Lucas Oil ASA Late Model drivers “Mad Dog” John Mattie and “Ringo” Jared King joined the Outlaw Figure 8s for a 15 lap main event. An oil spill halfway into the race sent San Bernardino’s “Dirty Harry” Kuenniger to the pits. Rod Proctor, who led much of the race, took the Little Green Onion/Extreme Exhibits & Logistics/Smart N Final machine to the checkered flag.
The evening was topped off with demolition derby. Ryan Dunn of Huntington Beach outlasted the carnage and claimed victory in his crashforcause.com derby car. In an effort to provide family entertainment in these economic hard times, the OSS handed out 1500 free tickets to fans in attendance Saturday night. These tickets allow fans to return to the OSS and enjoy another exciting evening of racing action during the remainder of the 2008 season.
