OSS WILL BE ‘TIMELESS’ THIS SATURDAY NIGHT
SAN BERNARDINO (July 9, 2008) – For more than six decades now the Orange Show Speedway, an ASA sanctioned quarter mile paved oval located at the National Orange Show Events Center in San Bernardino-California, has been the site of quality auto racing featuring every motor sports division that anyone could name. During those six decades the OSS has been the frequent racing haven for some of the sport's greatest champions and legends. This Saturday night, July 12th, the OSS will be hosting another great champion and future legend: Ron Hornaday Jr.
The second annual Ron Hornaday Jr Night at the OSS is going to be considerably more than just the three time NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series champion doing a meet and greet with the fans. The Palmdale-California native plans on winning a couple of races. He will be driving in the speedway's BSR Super Late Model Series as well as the Super Clean Modified Series events. Old school southern California racing fans will certainly recall Hornaday's short track abilities during the early days of his career before he began the climb up the NASCAR ladder. Fans who are newer to the sport are going to get the pleasure of witnessing a short track driving clinic from one of the best in the business.
The Hornaday 100, for the ASA-BSR Super Late Models, is being made possible by Blackjack Fireworks according to OSS Speedway Director Gary Stockman who noted
"I approached Blackjack Fireworks, who are out of Las Vegas, who graciously agreed to help the race track with this special project. We're always searching for people to help us out because we can't do it on our own when it comes to putting on these big shows. Anthony, from Blackjack Fireworks, stepped up to the plate that enabled us to raise the total Super Late Model Purse to $11,500."
The winner of the special race is going to receive $2,000. That, combined with the bragging rights of racing against and possibly beating a well known NASCAR champion, is expected to draw some of the best Super Late Model driving talent from the greater southwest area. Just starting the Hornaday 100 Main event guarantees drivers $300. This event is also a home coming for the Stockman family because his son will be accompanying Ron and Lindy Hornaday to the OSS. Danny Stockman is a long time employee of Kevin Harvick Inc and currently serves as Hornaday's Truck Chief. He will be on hand in the pits to supervise both the Hornaday car as well as the debut of the modified car driven by his brother Travis Stockman.
Hornaday will be driving the #33 Black Jack Fireworks Chevrolet in the Super Late Model race. According to Stockman the car is super ready for this race.
"It's Mike Hasem's Super Late Model car that he rented and he just went completely all through the car and Rick Keller just went all through the motor and they put this thing together for Hornaday to drive. John Keller who drives the #25 car here is the one that I worked with to put this whole thing together. It's just an unbelievable deal," he added.
Stockman's views on this car were reinforced last Saturday night when it was brought out onto the track for an exhibition run to promote the upcoming race. The car is incredibly fast and worthy of a visiting NASCAR champion to drive it. The Hornaday 100, presented by Blackjack Fireworks, will feature a starting field of 20 cars. The first 16 starting berths will be based on qualifying with the remainder of the field set via a B main race. Many drivers, including 2008 OSS Points leader Linny White, are truly excited about the opportunity to match their skills against Hornaday, but remember how much fun it was to interact with him during his last visit; “He is a regular guy, especially when he’s hanging out with us in the pits. But he is a three-time champion and it let’s you know where you stand. Just the opportunity to say ‘I beat Ron Hornaday’ is awesome.”
Two-time OSS Points Champion John Manke shared the same sentiment on how much of a special occasion this is; “These are the stories you share with family and friends, when you’re watching the races on television, at the track. It is something that links you with the great history of this sport for years to come.”
The car that Hornaday will be driving in the 75-lap feature for the Super Clean Modified Series already has a championship legacy to it. This car, owned by Doug Catania, is the same machine that won the 2007 Lucas Oil Modified Series points title with driver Danny Gay behind the wheel. This car will also have Hornaday's familiar #33 on its doors. Later it became known that Hornaday is Danny's lifetime racing hero. Now Danny Gay gets to crew chief for Ron Hornaday next Saturday night.
The 2008 Super Clean Modified Series is racing at five different tracks, including two events at the OSS, in three different states. The winner of the OSS event this Saturday night will receive $1,000 and the bragging rights that say he raced with Ron Hornaday Jr. The series 75-lap feature will start 22 Modifieds. The first 16 starters will be based on qualifying followed by four starters transferring from the B main and two placed into the field as provisional’s.
When OSS officials were putting together this special Ron Hornaday Jr evening they decided to go considerably further than the 100 lap BSR West Super Late feature and 75 lap Super Clean Modified race. They have pulled out all of the stops to make this a full evening of racing for the fans that they appreciate so much. Also seeing action this Saturday night will be the speedway's ASA Pro 4 Series which features full size late model stock cars with high-powered four cylinder engines. The Leno's Rico Taco Legend Series will also see plenty of action this Saturday night and their main event is expected to be every bit as exciting as it was back on July 5th when 23 cars took the green flag. Also getting some OSS track time will be the ASA Factory Fours, which is a starter series featuring compact cars and mini trucks. Because of their size, these race vehicles frequently treat fans to side by side door to door racing.
Race fans have two different ticket options available to them this Saturday night. First there's the traditional $10 general admission for adults that applies to each and every OSS race. The second option is a one of kind Cold Pit Pass offer that will be sold for $25. This special offer will get the fans a general admission seat in the grandstands but, more importantly, it will also allow them to tour the speedway's pit area prior to the start of the racing. A special Ron Hornaday Jr commemorative poker chip is also included in this package. Proceeds from the Cold Pit Pass program will directly benefit the nearby Tri C Kart Club.
There's another very special ticket offer for fans that happen to live in Rialto-California. The OSS recently launched a special “Celebrate Community” program as a way to acknowledge and salute the nearby cities that make up the area known as the Inland Empire. This Saturday night is ‘Celebrate Rialto’ Night, which means any resident of that community will be treated to a free general admission seat. A valid photo ID displaying proof of residence will be required. The OSS is also going to be giving mom and dad a price break as well because this Saturday night has also been designated as Family night which means children 12 and under will be admitted free as long as they are accompanied with a paid adult admission.
As if the second annual Ron Hornaday Jr Night couldn't get any better the OSS is going to treat the fans to a beach party after the racing. This special party, hosted by Ron Hornaday Jr, will be held at Dan's Garage Bar, which is located on the OSS patio behind the main grandstands. This event includes a barbeque, a live band for dancing and special activities such as beach volley ball and even a bounce house for the youngsters. There will be a live band performing, special activities for the kids and multiple displays from OSS partners such as Star Auto Parts, Camping World, Orange Show Quarter Midget Racing Association, Tri-C Kart Club and Auto Club Speedway.
Along those same lines, Orange Show Speedway announced a renewed partnership with Auto Club Speedway in the form of a special ticket promotion. As OSS celebrates 61 consecutive years a racing, fans will have the opportunity to purchase a special OSS/Auto Club Ticket package that includes one Pepsi 500 Ticket to Auto Club Speedway on Labor Day Weekend, two tickets to Orange Show Speedway good for the balance of the 2008 racing season, an OSS collectable T-Shirt and OSS Souvenir Program all for just $61.
