Rain relents as ‘Race To Remember’ runs at OSS
San Bernardino – The wild weather that has soaked
the 93rd Annual National Orange Show Festival took a
break
on Saturday as fair goers took advantage of a
free night of racing at OSS. The ‘Race To Remember’
serves to honor those that have given their lives in
the service of their country. Part of the evening’s
events featured a very special appearance by Kevyn
Major Howard, who played Rafterman in
Stanley
Kubrick’s
Full Metal Jacket and who has created his
own tribute to the US Military. Howard has personally
built vintage Chevy Nova drag cars that pay tribute to the men and women of the United States Marine Corp who
have died during the war in Iraq. The ’Fueled by the
Fallen’ vehicles will be display throughout the Fair
weekend that runs thru
Memorial Day on Monday. Fueled
by the Fallen supports the military families of those
who have suffered as a result of the war in Iraq. For
more information, please visit

Saturday night’s racing featured twin 50 lap main
events by the BSR West Super Late Models. Yucaipa’s
Rob Kiemele led all 50 laps and took the checkered
flag in the first event. Santee native Rick Chavez and
2007 Champion John Manke battled for second for 48
laps until a spin sent Manke to the rear of the pack.
Chavez couldn’t get around Kiemele though, and
finished in second.
In the second race, Roger Brown, who won the
main event on opening night, led the race early.
During lap 13, Brown was forced to the outside lane as
numerous cars passed him and he was unable to regain
his lead. 2006 Champion Glen Cummings led for the
remainder of the race resulting in his first main
event win of the 2008 season as Rick Chavez once again
took the number 2 spot.
The Leno’s Rico Taco Inex legends ran a shortened
race as track conditions forced officials to call the
race after 17 laps. Trophy dash winner Broc Murphy
had an oil leak that sent him back to the pits. After
two restarts, the track was still slick and officials
erred on the side of safety. Chad Shug, driving his
dad Rod Shug’s #37 car, earned the win after leading
for eight laps.
The ASA Speed Truck Challenge made its first
appearance of the season for a 100 lap main event.
Teammates Darren Young and Chris Buescher held the
first two positions for much of the race. Late in the
race, Bueshcer, a native of
Prosper, Texas, ran side
by side with his teammate for nearly four laps on the
historic quarter mile banked oval track of the OSS
before finally making the pass. Buescher led the
remainder of the race and earned his second win in
just his second race in an ASA Speed Truck.
