Lucky number seven for Legends champion.
San Bernardino – Darren Amidon seems to be
untouchable this season. The 2007 Leno’s Rico Taco
Inex Legends champion won his seventh main event on
Saturday night. Amidon started in the middle of a
field of 14 legends cars. Corona’s Paul Vitale led
the first ten laps of the 35 lap main event before
Amidon, who had been picking off cars one by one,
finally took the lead during lap 11. Chad Schug moved
into second place 18 laps into the race and put
numerous challenges on Amidon. Despite his hard
charging, Schug was unable to get past Amidon’s CJ
Norby Signs/Tel-Data Legends car and had to settle for
the runner up spot. Amidon has won the last seven
races in the Orange Show Speedway’s Leno’s Rico Taco
Inex Legends series. Amidon finished third in the
first of twin 35 lap main events on opening night. He
also finished third in a Legends main event on May
24th, but that race was not part of the points series.
Brian Malone has had a streak of bad luck and
mishaps since his last victory on May 10th. Saturday
night, however, he cruised his way into his second
Lucas Oil Late Models main event win of the season.
Malone started the race inside row two and ran second
behind Victorville’s Jared King. Malone passed King
but a caution flag came out before the complete lap
was scored, returning King to the lead. Malone made
the pass again during lap 10 of the 50 lap main event.
Malone went unchallenged until Kevin James of Yucaipa
caught up to Malone and tried to force Malone out of
his way. Malone fended off James’ advances and took
the Palm Canyon Contractors/AAA Paving/Blue Eagle Race
Video/Jam Sportswear Chevy Monte Carlo to Victory Lane
for the second time in 2008.
Jim Mardis made it back-to-back victories in the
ASA Stock Pony class. Mardis took the lead from
Rookie of the Year hopeful Robby Hornsby in lap three
of the 35 lap main event with Matt Goodwin in tow.
Mardis never lost the lead as Jim Edmiston, Ryan
Bragdon and Sean Spencer put on a show in the battle
for fourth place. Mardis and Edmiston had been
alternating main event wins all season long, but
Mardis now has two consecutive victories, while Matt
Goodwin and Robby Hornsby held Edmiston back to a
fourth place finish.
Some All-American Metal returned to the historic ¼ mile high-banked oval of the Orange Show Speedway as
the CEC Embroidery Street Stocks ran a 35 lap main
event on Saturday. Highland’s Kyle Meyer led all 35
laps to take the checkered flag for the third time in
the 2008 season. Hesperia’s Ralph Adams, Big Bear’s
Johnny Russo and Fontana’s Mike Stone all competed in
the main event despite being involved in a five-car
pile-up during the main event on June 21st.
The Mini Stock Car division ran its third main
event this season. During lap three of the 15-lap
event, Steven Remley of Long Beach spun coming out of
turn two. This forced Santee’s Diane Nivens to hit
the crash wall. Both drivers walked away from the
incident but they were unable to finish the race.
After the restart Grand Terrace native Dean Caskey and
Canyon Country’s Mike O’Hara traded the lead for the
next nine laps. Caskey took the lead in lap 13 and
took the checkered flag. Caskey has won all three
main events so far in 2008 in his P Caskey Tax &
Accounting/Russ Opmann sponsored Mini Stock Car.
The Inex Bandoleros were back for their second
race of the season at the Orange Show Speedway.
During lap 10, Parker Malone spun while coming out of
turn two and was hit by Kyle Niquette and Brandon
Osborne. All three cars returned to the pits, and
only Malone and Osborne were able to get back in the
race, but both were several laps down. Alex Morgan
from Lake Havasu City, AZ inherited the lead on the
restart and finished the final five laps to bring the
Rhino Eyewear/Jim’s Autofab Inex Bandolero car to the
winner’s circle.
On Saturday night the Orange Show Speedway
started a new tradition. The evening’s racing
typically begins with trophy dashes in each division.
These trophy dashes run the four fastest qualifiers in
a four-lap race with the winner being awarded a
plaque. OSS has decided to give the bottom four
qualifiers in each division a chance to run in a
trophy dash and began the Tortoise dash, recognizing
the fastest of the slowest. Tortoise dash wins will
be included in each division’s weekly results.
