Lady’s first as Marzullo claims victory in Factory 4s
San Bernardino – Frustration is a feeling that Kim Marzullo is quite familiar with. After leading in the previous two ASA Factory 4 main events, Marzullo spun her Nitrorocks.com sponsored Toyota truck in the critical final laps, snatching away an almost inevitable victory. Saturday night her luck turned, however. “I had some anger issues I had to deal with,” Marzullo said after her victory. Bloomington’s Trevor Matcham led the early laps of the race until Sean Medina, then Brandon Huizenga took the lead. Using the new outside line on the ¼ mile banked oval of the OSS, Marzullo passed Walnut’s Art Ramirez and Huizenga to take the lead. Marzullo held the lead as Ramirez continually put pressure on her. A crash involving Riverside native Duane Blay and Huizenga’s teammate Drew Reed brought out the yellow flag during lap 28. After what Marzullo claimed “seemed like forever,” the trucks were cleared and the race restarted only to have another yellow flag come out. Ramirez attempted to take the lead on the final restart, but Marzullo held him off and won the race. Marzullo’s victory was her first main event win as well as the first time a female driver has won a main event in the ASA Factory 4 division.
Highland’s Kyle Meyer won his second main event with his S J Meyer Properties sponsored Chevy Nova in the CEC Embroidery Street Stocks division. The race was most notable because of a spectacular four-car pile-up that involved Ralph Adams, former champion Johnny Russo, Lou Gamache, and Mike Stone. The four cars all hit the wall going into turn one with Russo’s car ending up on top of the pile. Remarkably all four drivers walked away, slightly shaken, but uninjured. It is believed that an oil spill on the track caused the drivers to lose traction and hit the wall.
The BSR West ASA Super Late Models ran twin 50 lap main events on Saturday night. The first race was plagued with yellow flags as 8 of the 15 cars in the field were involved in spins or crashes. 2007 points champion John Manke started in the front and led all 50 laps to earn his first win of the 2008 season. The second race was equally aggressive. Opening night winner Roger Brown led the race going into lap four while Redlands native Barry Karr worked his way through the field. Karr eventually passed Brown in the latter half of the race and held the lead as Linny White of Colton moved into second and continued to pressure Karr for the lead. After four second place finishes in the previous seven main events, Barry Karr took the Burgeson’s Heating & Air Conditioning/Stickshift Transmission sponsored Chevy Monte Carlo to Victory Lane in his first ever main event win.
Riverside’s Don Minut led 30 consecutive green flag laps in the Maverick’s Steak House/So Cal Wraps sponsored Ford Fusion to win his second main event of 2008 in the ASA Pro 4 division. In a fierce battle for second place, Chuck Becker finally out drove Kendall Scheidecker whose car became loose and slid through turn two, allowing Becker to make the pass in lap 28. Scheidecker finished third but was disqualified after post-race tech inspection
The Stock Car USA division ran their second main event of the 2008 season on Saturday. Riverside’s Mark Whitson led the first three laps until a flat tire sent him to the pits and out of the race. Whitson’s brother Tom led the remainder of the race to take the checkered flag.
