HORNADAY RETURNS IN SUPPORT OF LOCAL RACING AS TOUGH ECONOMICS HIT OSS
SAN BERNARDINO – What was to be the highlight of the 2008 Season at the NOS Events Center and for the historic ¼ mile high bank oval that resides on the fairgrounds, the 93rd National Orange Show Festival became nothing more than a microcosm for the region. Severe thunderstorms, lightning and pummeling rain turned the annual celebration into a defecit the Fairgrounds will embattle to overcome. The direct effects to the speedway as clear as NOS Events Center President / General Manager Dan Jimenez announced the cancellation of the Fireworks Show on the July 5th OSS Race Date;
“This is the worst part of my responsibilities. I want to make sure that there will always be Motorsports here at the Fairgrounds, and these are some of the tough choices we have to make to ensure that happens.”
News travels fast. Three-time, and reigning NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Champion Ron Hornaday Jr. got wind of the news thru his truck chief Danny Stockman, and the ‘wheels started turning’ on how they could help the track where Ron would frequent early in his racing career. A window of opportunity arose and on July 12, 2008, Ron will return to race both in the BSR West Super Late Models and the Super Clean Modifieds; Hornaday is definitely excited to return and help a track that he calls home;
“It feels great to run on the short tracks out in, California, so this will be fun. It’s great to see family and friends out there, but the fans, well, most of them helped me get my start,” stated Hornaday.
Director of Competition, Gary Stockman's son, Danny Stockman is Ron Hornaday's Truck Chief at Kevin Harvick, Inc., for the #33 Camping World, Chevrolet. Danny will also be on hand to Crew Chief for Ron and for his brother, Travis Stockman who will be driving his brand new Modified for the first time.
Hornaday will compete in a Super Late Model, as he did last time at OSS, yet, he will also be racing a Modified. Doug Catania, is the owner of the Champion #22 Modified, and Stockman thought Ron would love to drive it. Gary Stockman contacted, Doug about Hornaday driving the car, “How would you feel about being the Crew Chief for Hornaday?” asked, Stockman. Danny’s response was, “Are you kidding me? Heck Yes!!!” …As it turns out, Ron is and always has been his idol.
Ron will interacting with fans one of two ways. With additional ties to local racing, fans will have a chance to purchase a special ‘Cold’ Pit Pass that will include admission to the speedway, opportunity to visit the pits prior to race time, and additionally receive a commemorative poker chip for the evening. Proceeds will benefit the Tri-C Kart Club. Immediately following the race activities on Saturday, Ron will host a post-race party at ‘Dan’s Garage Bar’ (OSS Patio) that will include an band performing live.
