Daniel sets track record, rockets to first main event
win
San Bernardino (June 1, 2008) –Ryan Daniel of Mentone started Saturday night on a high note. Daniel set a new track
speed record during qualifying in his McWilliams Honey
Supply/ Larry Jacinto Construction sponsored
Chevrolet. Daniel then went on to win his first ever
main event in the 50 lap Lucas Oil Late Model race on
the historic high banked quarter mile of the OSS. The
race was not easily won, however. Barstow’s Robbie
Brand led the first three laps before getting pushed
to the outside allowing 2006/2007 champion Jim Conklin
to take the lead. Conklin led the next 29 laps with
Grand Terrace’s Brian Malone continuously putting the
challenge on him. On lap 32 Conklin spun in turn two
bringing out the yellow and sending him to the rear of
the pack.
It looked like Malone would hold the lead on the
restart but a problem with the suspension in his Palm
Canyon Contractor sponsored Monte Carlo forced him to
forfeit the lead, but he was determined to finish the
race. Malone’s teammate, John Mattie then led the
race until Daniel came around and the two raced side
by side before Daniel made the pass in lap 42. Daniel
would lead the remainder of the race and claim his
first ever main event victory.
"I really didn't know what happened. I just thought
here's my chance and here we go. I knew that I was
faster than the 24 car (John Mattie), and I knew it
was just a matter of time when I could get by him
clean. That's what I did and it feels good that I
didn't have to get on him," Daniels said amid
celebrating his win.
The Leno’s Rico Taco Inex Legends ran an equally
exciting race. Young driver Broc Murphy, who was
unable to race a full season in 2007, led the race
early. The race had to be completely restarted after
the green flag dropped when Chase Catania made contact
with teammate Brian Tyczki (Tes’-ka), causing Catania to lose his front right tire and taking him out of the
race. 2007 champion Darren Amidon and Chad Schug
battled for second place for 12 laps until Amidon
finally got around Schug. Amidon eventually caught up
with Murphy as they raced side by side for almost four
laps before Amidon took the lead. Chad Schug then
took his turn at Murphy in yet another side-by-side
contest before Schug made the pass just in time to
take second place behind winner Darren Amidon.
Kyle Meyer led all 30 laps as the ASA CEC
Embroidery Street Stocks raced in their second main
event of the 2008 season. Andrew Murphy, one of three
Murphy brothers (Broc in Legends, Austin in Late
Models, all taking top five in their divisions) who
raced on Saturday night, won a heated battle for
second place with Johnny Russo of Big Bear. Russo
himself is a multi-time champion in the Street Stock
division.
2007 champion Jim Edmiston won the Stock Pony
event which ran 30 straight green flag laps. Ryan
Bragdon of Beaumont led the early laps of the race
before being forced to the outside line and “freight-trained” by several cars to give Edmiston the
lead. 2006 champion Jimmy Mardis, who celebrated his
23rd birthday on Saturday, played ridesmaid to
Edmiston once again.
The Inex Bandoleros ran their first main event of
the 2008 season. Alto Loma’s Eric loan won the 10
lap event with first timers at OSS Kyle Niquette and
Parker Malone (son of Lucas Oil Late Model driver
Brian Malone) finishing second and third respectively.
The Junior Ford Focus Midgets ran a 10 lap
exhibition with three drivers showing their stuff on
the paved oval of the OSS. Brothers Cody and Jake
Swanson finished first and second with Lance Butler
rounding out third. The Jr. Ford Focus Midgets will
run a full field at the OSS on Saturday, June 8th.
